Google acquires Wavii $30M & looks to provide personalized topic specific content
Similar to Yahoo’s recent acquisition of Summly for $30M, Google acquires Wavii which uses natural language processing to pull out topics from content, and aims to deliver topic specific personalized news to each user:
These include which other topics are involved in the events they comment on, how often they click into events about each topic, what topics they search for and what topic pages they visit.
This is a good sign for content curators. Google has primarily focused on solving the one-time search problem where you are searching for a single piece of information such as “What is the weather?” or “Where can I read about X?. They have not done a great job at persistent search where you follow a single topic over a long period of time. Despite them killing Google Reader It’s refreshing to see them take another look at persistent search problems.
