Google targets press releases in SEO update

Tom Foremski of ZDNet writes a sensationalist titled article “Did Google just kill PR agencies”.  He is basing this off of Google’s demotion of optimized anchor text in press releases.  Here’s an example from the article:

Links with optimized anchor text in articles or press releases distributed on other sites. For example: ”There are many wedding rings on the market. If you want to have a wedding, you will have to pick the best ring. You will also need to buy flowers and a wedding dress.”

In reality, Google isn’t killing PR agencies.  They very much have a role in pitching stories to journalists and Tom should (and probably does) know better.  Google is just out to kill the self gloating press release method of promotion that so many of us despise, but have to do as a necessary evil.
