It bears repeating that though content creation and content curation conceptually can be distinguished from each other, the best content curation necessarily involves the exercise of editorial judgment, and virtually always means the best curation efforts involve substantial annotation and content creation as well.

Google's efforts to use content quality, freshness and originality in its search rankings are one reason the best curation efforts require "human agency," rather than algorithmic processes alone.

Content curation has become a hot topic in 2012. Corrine Weisgerber, an associate professor at St. Edwards University, has an excellent presentation on content curation. She differentiates content curation from content aggregation--content aggregation can be automated but content curation requires the human touch for finding, evaluating and contextualizing information.
