At South by Southwest, The New York Times’ David Carr argued that much curation is essentially theft of creator efforts. Those of you familiar with some other ecosystems will see the pattern here. Movie theaters cannot be owned by studios, for example, in part to prevent an old vertical monopoly deemed unhealthy. But think of curators partly as distributors of original content. Recent debates about "curation ethics," though possibly useful in some respects, essentially misses the point.
One blogger's "curation" is another writer's "theft," some might note, but reblogging, sharing, pinning, repining, highlighting, aggregating, retweeting and other forms of curation are simply part of the media landscape. One might as well argue about whether tires or brakes are more important to the operation of a car.
