    1. David Meerman Scott is mistaken about content curation

Explore Social Media Today (Sep 17 2012)

David Meerman Scott gives an honest opinion content curation saying:

Yes, there is value in pointing to others work. But that is the point – it is other people's work, not your own.

But he simplifies curation to the simple act of linking to other's content which is incorrect.  Content curation also involves organizing, and most important annotating and adding your perspective to that content along the way.  Lastly, David is wrong about curation being a poor substitute for curated content. A good curator knows that curation is not a substitute for original content but a supplement.

Curation can be integrated sharing. For example, when I quote statistics or opinions from analyst reports in a blog post, I'm curating that information. But I'm wrapping it with my own thoughts and ideas to perhaps apply a different take or perspective. I'm adding something I hope is valuable to the original source information.

Content curation will help with the latter two drivers. Content curation is a good way to refresh a site with fresh content on a regular basis. Conducted over a long enough time frame, the content repository also becomes more encyclopedic.

My overwhelming impression of the most important trend at SXSW is the unassailable arrival of content marketing. It’s been building for the past year, but the the stuff that used to belong to PR and to the communications department has been hijacked by marketing. Put more diplomatically, there is both a new urgency on marketing’s side to develop a story, as opposed to an ad, and an even greater tendency for PR to follow marketing’s lead.
