About Sophia B Liu (sophiabliu):
I am currently a PhD candidate at University of Colorado at Boulder (CU). I am in an interdisciplinary program called Technology, Media and Society at the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) Institute. I received my BA in Social Science specializing in Research and Analytical Methods and two minors in Information and Computer Science as well as Digital Arts at University of California, Irvine. I spent my fourth year abroad at University of Sussex in England taking Cultural Studies courses. I also was a research assistant at the Natural Hazards Center in the Institute of Behavioral Science. My advisor is Assistant Professor Leysia Palen in the Department of Computer Science at CU. Our connectivIT lab works in the area of Crisis Informatics, which works at the intersection of the social, technical and informational aspects of crisis and disasters. Our lab is currently working on Project EPIC, a multi-disciplinary, multi-university, multi-lingual research effort to support the information needs by members of the public during times of mass emergency. I particularly work at the intersection of crisis informatics and cultural heritage informatics using new media to design social media technologies around grassroots activities.
